Shopify Agentic Plan vs owning the catalog

20 October 2026 ยท for store owners and e-commerce managers

Shopify now offers to solve agent commerce for you: opt in to its agentic program, and your catalog gets surfaced and sold through the agent channels Shopify operates. It is free to join and it takes minutes. For many stores it is genuinely the right answer. This page is the trade-off written down honestly, including the cases where opting in beats everything we could sell you.

What the Agentic Plan actually is

Joining means your products are listed in a catalog that Shopify controls and sells through agent surfaces it operates. The setup is free; the cost arrives per sale as a fee on agent-driven orders. Nothing is wrong with that shape - marketplaces have worked like it for decades. The question is not "is it good", it is who owns the conversation: which brand the agent is talking to when it answers "what should I get my sister who loves trail running", and who keeps the intent data behind that answer.

What you give up

What you give up by not joining

Honesty cuts both ways. Owning your own agent front door means building and running an llms.txt, a machine manifest and an agent-facing endpoint that reads your live catalog and hands back cart links into your checkout. Done with an agency or a developer, that is weeks of work and real money. Done by hand, it breaks the day your catalog structure changes - our first guide walks through what that hand-built version involves. If your store has no developer and no budget, Shopify's plan gets you agent-competent today, for nothing upfront - and a sale with a fee attached still beats a sale that went to the store that answered.

The middle path

There is a third option between "list in someone else's catalog" and "hand-write protocols": a front door on your own domain that you own. Clair reads your public catalog the way a shopping agent does (the free check shows you exactly what an agent sees today), then hosts your agent door - llms.txt, manifest and an agent endpoint - answering from your catalog and handing carts back to your own checkout for $299 a month, with the intent log yours to keep. It costs more upfront than the Agentic Plan and keeps everything the Agentic Plan hands over. If you want a feel for where stores actually stand, our public leaderboard ranks real stores by how well a shopping agent can buy from them.

So: if you are a small shop with no developer and no budget, opt in to Shopify's plan and move on to other problems. If the customer relationship, the intent data or your pricing policy is strategic to you - usually true past a few hundred orders a month - you want a door you own. That is the trade in one line: reach now, rented; reach later, owned.

Clair is itself run by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how a two-person company can offer an owned front door at a fraction of an agency build.
