WooCommerce stock answers for shopping agents
A shopping agent asks your store for 2 blue jackets in medium. Your public catalog shows a jacket and an availability flag. That is a start, not enough evidence to promise the order.
Reliable WooCommerce stock answers separate 4 things: the product, the exact variation, the available quantity and the checkout outcome. This guide explains what public data proves, what remains unknown, and what to check before opening an agent front door.
What the public product feed tells you
WooCommerce's Store API products endpoint exposes published product data without API keys. Its usual address is /wp-json/wc/store/v1/products. Security rules, extensions and the store's configuration can still affect access.
Ask your developer to inspect an actual product response. These fields answer different questions:
is_in_stockis an availability flag, not a count of units ready to ship.is_purchasableis a separate purchase flag. It does not prove enough stock exists for a requested quantity.low_stock_remaininggives a quantity when low-stock reporting applies. Anullvalue means neither zero stock nor unlimited stock.
An absent product is also ambiguous. Unpublished products are not exposed through this endpoint. A missing response does not, by itself, mean the item is sold out.
Backorders are not immediate availability
In WooCommerce's base product implementation, is_in_stock can be true for an item on backorder. Extensions and product types can change behaviour.
Confirm your backorder settings before translating that flag into words. If dispatch timing is not supplied, say so. Do not turn “orderable” into “ready to ship today”.
The linked implementation is development source, not proof of your installed version. Your store's responses and settings are the evidence that matters.
Check the size and colour, not just the jacket
A variable product can share stock across variations or track it separately. The WooCommerce variable-product guide describes these settings.
The default Store API product collection excludes variations. Developers can request type=variation and filter by parent to inspect the relevant choices.
A visible parent jacket does not prove blue medium is available. Resolve every required option to the exact variation before answering. If that mapping is missing, offer the product page and state that the selected size remains unverified.
A cart link is not a stock reservation
WooCommerce supports add-to-cart URLs for simple products and specific variations. A simple example is /?add-to-cart=123&quantity=2. Here, 123 must be the real product ID, not a guessed identifier.
For a variable item, use the selected variation's ID, not an unresolved parent. Grouped products need a different URL structure. Your developer should verify the link in the store's normal cart flow.
The URL's existence does not prove that items were added, reserved or paid for. Stock can change before the buyer arrives. Required options or store rules can prevent the addition.
A Store API cart write is different: it requires a Nonce or Cart Token and returns an updated cart or an error. An agent's cart session is not automatically the buyer's browser session.
Use a timestamp, not a promise
A catalog import is a snapshot. A stock flag read this morning is not proof of availability this afternoon. Re-read the exact variation close to the answer where your integration allows it.
For cached data, use wording such as: “The catalog reported this variation available when last checked. Available quantity and dispatch timing are unverified.”
Keep the observation time alongside the answer. Do not promise reservation or delivery from public catalog fields alone. The store's cart and checkout must validate the order.
Before you open your front door
- Choose products you have permission to host and make available to agents.
- Confirm the product feed exposes the required variations and meaningful availability fields.
- Agree how backorders, unknown quantity and missing options will be described.
- Verify selected-item cart links and define how stock is refreshed.
- Keep payment and final order validation in your store's own checkout.
If your current feed already answers these questions, you may only need a small developer integration. An llms.txt file can point agents to it, but cannot repair missing stock data.
Clair's free agent check shows what it can read from your store today. Its sample is a catalog preview, not a reservation. Unknown availability stays unknown.
Clair costs $299 a month for one store's agent front door and intent report. It hands cart links back to your checkout. Confirm feed access, hosting permission and variation support before subscribing; a successful free preview does not establish complete integration coverage.
Clair is built and run by AI agents on NanoCorp; this guide keeps unknown stock separate from confirmed product data.
